Web Design - 5 Important Points Print E-mail

design blog - web design rules articleWhen it comes to your web site and the way it should be designed, some extra attention must be paid to esure the web design performs optimally to serve its purpose. Please read through this article and learn about five important rules that are important to every web site and to make sure your web site performs well.

1) Splash pages are bad in web design

Splash pages are the very first pages you see after you arrive at a web site. They normally have a really stunning image with words like "Hello" or "To Enter - Click here". The sad fact is, they're simply that – beautiful pictures that have no real goal in web design. I understand they are done to get a “Wow” effect but in reality they use Flash animations which load too long, so I personally quit the web site if I have to wait more than few seconds to see the content. Don't let your guests have a reason to click on the "Go Back" button! Offer them the worth of your web site up front without using sloppy splash page.

2) Excessive banner advertisements isn't a great idea too

Everybody tents to ignore banner advertisements therefore by using too many web banners you'll be wasting valuable web site assets. As an alternative, offer a little better and more valuable content and weave relevant affiliate links into your content. Do let your guests feel comfortably to shop around for what they really need rather than being pushed to buy.

3) Simple and clear navigation is a must

The best way to design a clear web site it to produce a simple and straightforward navigation menu throughout your site so that even a young kid can fully understand it and use it with a happy face. Be careful with sophisticated Flash menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus that are used in web design and really look nice, but mess around by being too shiny and flashy. If your guests do not know the way to navigate, they're going to leave your web site straight away.

When guests are deeply engrossed in browsing your web site, you will need to take care of one simple thing that they recognize which part of the site they're in right now. That way, they're going to be ready to browse relevant data or navigate to any section of your site in an easy and simple way. Do not confuse your visitors as confusion leads to clicking "Close Tab" where your web site is.

5) Avoid sounds and music in web design

If your visitor is going browse for a long period of time at your web site, reading your content, you'll wish to create positive approach that they don't seem to be irritated by some music playing round and round on your web site. If you must add audio, ensure that they can control the volume of the music and that the volume controls are easy accessible.

If you want to find a reliable web design company who can take care of your website, then you must search carefully to avoid mistakes that can cost you a lot of money and time.

A designer must never give up his profession and try to become better. No one said Apple's design is the way to success. Apple is now trendy but it might not be in several years time.

nice great article.
Simplicity rules! It makes a websites look sleek, reduce nagivation confusion and it helps achieving desired goals and results (I.e., more signups, subscribers and sales). But too often it seems elusive to simplify your website design. No matter how hard you try, you can’t make your work look like Apple’s. So what does a website designer really needs to do?

Google's Map API is one of the most popular JavaScript libraries available on the internet. The features of Google Maps are very powerful however there are plenty of other alternatives available out there you could try out like MapQuest, Open Layers or Microsoft Bing, which might be less demanding APIs offering free usage if you haven't got too many visitors to your website.

How to decrease the page load time if I have integrated Google maps API in the footer of my website? I have seen a website which was great in terms of designing but when I added Google map in footer, page load speed decreased surprisingly. :-|

Also, it is good to add something about PNG in terms of web design.
I really like the use use of PNG files as long as they don't take too long to download. They can add a dynamism to the design.
Another thing is PNG is a lossless compression file format, and they support graduated transparencies which gives great overlay effects which can be quite hard to achieve in web builds. PNG's for line art, text, type and graphic elements, JPG's for photographic elements.

Thanks Jay, the times splash pages were in use are gone and every web developer/designer should avoid using splash pages as explained in the article.

I like the way you said about "Splash pages are bad in web design."

Indeed, I would really hit the "X" button everytime it will too long before I could view the content.

Very well said!

Thanks for your comments! Heavy items may slow down the loading time, so I recommend using as much text as possible, which is good for SEO too.
Regards!
